Strong sexual selection fails to protect against inbreeding-driven extinction in a moth

چکیده
Abstract Sexual selection is predicted to influence population persistence because skew in male reproductive success may facilitate the purging of mutation load. We manipulated strength sexual populations Indian meal moths, Plodia interpunctella, by adjusting adult sex ratios be either male- or female-biased, leading strong and weak males, respectively. After between 19 22 generations experimental evolution, we examined whether load differed these enforcing successive inbreeding, tracking extinction events, offspring viability assaying effect inbreeding on mating female choice. found no rate viability. did, however, find changes both choice, with being influenced ratio treatment number inbreeding. Males from male-biased were more successful at stock females, declined rapidly regardless treatment. Females less likely mate males onset experiment, but tended frequently increasing compared females female-biased populations. Our results demonstrate that while behaviors have diverged lines loads remained similar. This suggests benefits fitness low slow accumulate under benign environmental conditions which evolved.

Sexual selection fails to promote adaptation to a new environment.
Selection can be divided into sexual and nonsexual components. Some work finds that a component of sexual selection, adaptive female selection for good genes, can promote nonsexual fitness. Less studied is the benefit from sexual selection in toto, that is, when intra- and intersexual selection are both present and able to affect females directly and indirectly. Here an upper bound for the net ...
متن کاملChronic HIV-1 Infection Frequently Fails to Protect against Superinfection
Reports of HIV-1 superinfection (re-infection) have demonstrated that the immune response generated against one strain of HIV-1 does not always protect against other strains. However, studies to determine the incidence of HIV-1 superinfection have yielded conflicting results. Furthermore, few studies have attempted to identify superinfection cases occurring more than a year after initial infect...
متن کاملIschemic Postconditioning Fails to Protect against Neonatal Cerebral Stroke
The lack of efficient neuroprotective strategies for neonatal stroke could be ascribed to pathogenic ischemic processes differentiating adults and neonates. We explored this hypothesis using a rat model of neonatal ischemia induced by permanent occlusion of the left distal middle cerebral artery combined with 50 min of occlusion of both common carotid arteries (CCA). Postconditioning was perfor...

A recent study has used inbreeding depression to gain insight into the maintenance of additive genetic variation in populations, with intriguing implications for good genes models of sexual selection.

We present a transcriptomic analysis aimed at investigating whether the changes in gene expression that occur under inbreeding generally reduce or enhance inbreeding depression. Discerning between these two alternatives can be addressed only when both changes in expression due to inbreeding and to inbreeding depression are estimated simultaneously. We used Affymetrix 2.0 arrays to study the cha...
